Aerial view of the Walled Garden

This aerial photograph of the Walled Garden was taken in 2011 from a helicopter. We had just dug the 6 beds of our orchard, three circular and three rectangular. It was magical to see the work from the air.
A hundred and fifty years ago no stately home could exist without a Walled Garden, it was the only way to keep the family and the many staff fed in a world where there were no supermarkets, no fridges and no freezers had yet been invented. You need some very particular skills and a tremendous knowledge to keep your family alive without those three modern inventions.
The fruit trees are now growing very well and we have just weeded and manured all the beds where the trees were planted, so we should have lots of fruit this autumn.
